October - Russia, Revolution & Russian Roulettes
Something about Octobers, Revolutions and Russian Roulettes especially in the context of New Zealand Cricket this year. New Zealand may only be the 6th largest island country, not the single largest nation on the planet, occupying more than 11% of its land mass. Yet it has staged a Red October both in both red ball and white ball cricket!
Red October of Revolutions ...
This October of 2024 has seen two upsets even if not exactly revolutions in the game of Cricket. Ladies first. The New Zealand Women's team staged the first one in T20 cricket. Next their men's team created halted the Indians' winning streak of 18 series on home soil.
A T20 World Cup Win & the Tiger Tamed in its Lair
New Zealand eves upstaged Champions Australia and a strong South Africa to win the ICC Women's T20 World Cup. The Kiwi men have now sealed a test match series in India very comfortably. Barring a few sessions that India managed to control, New Zealand never really seemed in much trouble.
Revolutions & Russian Roulettes
Not all Indians may need to be aware of the Russian Roulette as a metaphor for a dangerous gamble. But that need not prevent their cricket team from opting to bat first in tricky conditions in the first test. Such is Life. We may call the toss correctly... and yet fumble at choosing the winner's option, to bat or field first. A thin line called final outcome separates the sublime and the ridiculous.
Bearded!
More cricketers representing India are seen with a beard these days, more famously former Captain Virat Kohli and his successor. Bearded may be an adjective to qualify the appearance of players in the Indian men's dressing room. It may also be a verb denoting what the New Zealand cricket team subjected them to.
